What do I eat?

The guilt is eating me alive at how long it has taken me to write another blog!!!! Hopefully, my little group of readers has not left me. All I can say is that life has gotten in the way of bloggin; however, in my head I have written you guys 100's. I will try to be more consistent, bare with me.

Many people question me on what I eat. A common misconception is that I only eat fruits and veggies. I do eat a lot of fruits and veggies but my body would be begging for more than just that.

So here is a combination of what my typical day may look like:

AM Drinks:
Herbal Decaf Tea
Wheat grass shot (gotta have it J)

BREAKFAST:
Slice of Ezekial Sprouted Grain Toast with organic almond butter, sliced banana, and bee pollen sprinkled on the top. (This is excellent pre-workout fuel!)
Or
Cooked Millet or Amarenth (Amarenth is 90% digestible protein!) with cinnamon, raisins, and a touch of raw honey (Millet is a good grain for the gluten intolerant people)
Or
Fresh Juice: Carrots, Celery, apple, spinach, with a touch of spiralina for protein
Or
ORGANIC, FREE RANGE egg, with tomato and bell pepper (I do not eat any dairy or meat unless it is certified organic, free range, or grass fed. This is imperative to good health….more on this later!)

Small snack:
Usually a piece of fruit or a green supplemental drink such as Dr. Fosters Essential Nutrients.

LUNCH:
Typically a salad…or last nights leftovers J
Not a boring blaggh salad, I usually add some of these ingredients: an assortment of lettuce, carrots, beets, artichoke hearts, olives, beans, sprouts, avocado, sunflower seeds, nuts, etc.
Dressing: Usually, Balsamic Vinegar and Udo Oil

Small Snack:
Maybe a coconut water or hemp protein shake… just something light to get me through the next workout

DINNER:
We really try to switch dinner up. Variety is key so that we get a wide range of nutrients for vital health and recovery.
Vegetable soups with organic quinoa(we make our own broth out of water, celery, and onions)
Or
Mexican nights with all fresh ingredients like beans, lettuce, tomato, avocado, carrots, olives, wrapped in a sprouted grain tortilla (sprouted grain is much easier for the body to digest and is a good source of protein)
Or
Wild Salmon (ONLY BUY WILD!!! Farm raised salmon is often grey and is dyed pink for color) with steamed potato and other fresh vegetables
Or
Raw spaghetti using zucchini for noodles (this is so good! Interested in the recipe? Let me know.

……..I could keep going on and on with dinner options but we just use non-processed, organic ingredients to make incredibly yummy and nutritious dinners.

I hope this helps! Any questions, let me know

What's the Difference?

Without a doubt you have noticed the expansive growth of organic products available today. Food companies are realizing that consumers are becoming more aware. Companies are also realizing they can make more money if they slap an organic label on the same products. Any way you look at it, a box of “organic macaroni and cheese” is an oxymoron. At least you aren’t getting genetically modified grains that make up the pasta, and you probably are not getting as high of a dose of chemicals in the cheese stuff as a regular box.
…..The truth of the matter is, we have to become ingredient readers, we have to educate ourselves as to what we are putting in are bodies. As I mentioned in my last blog, we can not trust food and drug companies to give us what are bodies truly need.
So today I thought you would find it interesting to know; what is the difference between organic and non-organic produce? Sadly, I think the only thing they share is their names….
Let’s use are senses:
What you see- Take a look at a conventional apple. No dings, no blemishes, no dirt, looks like a plastic piece of fruit. Conventional apples can last months in storage without going bad!
What you feel- Scrap your fingernail across the skin and notice the build up of wax.
What you smell- You can thank conventional farmers for spraying your fruit with artificial flavoring so your senses are tricked into thinking it is natural (but your body knows better!).
What you taste- If you are use to conventional farming your taste buds have adapted to this artificial taste. Taste test a nasty plastic apple and a beautiful scrumptious organic apple and your taste buds will quickly be re-educated to yummy nutrition.
What your body receives- Here is the kicker!!! In general (not just with apples) with conventional crappy farming your body receives in vegetables 60% less magnesium, 80% less Iron, 20% less copper, 60% less sodium, and 90% less potassium! In fruit 90% less magnesium, 70% less Iron, 60% less copper, 90% less sodium, and 80% less potassium!!!! These statistics alone show us how we live in a nation full of fat, malnourished people. Even when you are eating something healthy your body is neglected the nutrition it could have if only you were eating Organic and Biodynamic produce!

(Inside our fridge.......)

Where to Start: Start with avoiding the “Dirty Dozen” these fruits and veggies are known for being grown with high levels of pesticides and herbicides (If you aren’t going to go all organic at least buy these organic):
Apples
Cherries
Grapes
Nectarines
Peaches
Pears
Raspberries
Strawberries
Bell peppers
Celery
Potatoes
Spinach
I know organic is more expensive. Trust me; I cannot wait for the day we do not have to pay more for fruits and vegetables that are better for us, and actually cost less to grow than conventional farming! Pay more for organic produce and think of it as an investment into your health. You can pay now or pay later in medical bills because you choose to have your produce with chemicals. These chemicals wreak havoc on your body. Bottom line, ORGANIC is so worth the extra cost!!!!

Chad got a little excited making this salad, but it is all organic, so I thought you would want to see it for an idea. :)

it takes life to give life

A recent study found 21 chemical pesticide residues at high concentrations
in an elementary school cafeteria from the just 5 foods served.

It can be overwhelming to discover that you have been lied to. No one wants to be lied to. Of course, the truth can hurt, but there is absolutely nothing like the pain of believing in someone or something and then finding out all along you have been deceived.

You have been lied to.

We all have. It is sad but at least it is true. I think we can all agree that the truth is what we want. So even though it is not always the greatest to be the messenger of truth it doesn’t hurt me to tell you this. It makes me happy, because I know you are reading. The thought of you reading this and the hope that you digest and understand it makes me ecstatic.
The fact is we are living in a society that is so driven by money that people will do anything to make more of it. Unfortunately for us, as consumers, we are the ones who suffer from it. The foods and products that the average American consumes are a part of a research and marketing scheme.
Allow me to explain: Lets pick on a bag of chips….

Have you ever said, I am just going to have a couple of them and end up eating the whole bag? Or maybe, you have a ton of self control and you are able to only eat a couple but you find yourself really wanting more. There is a reason for this. Food companies spend millions researching how to get you to eat more and crave more. It is actually genius how they do this. They play with your appestat (Appestat: The region of the brain that controls appetite and eating).
You see, from birth your body was created to need vitamins and minerals. When you put food in your mouth, your body begins immediately working to sort out what it needs and what it doesn’t need. So when you put a chip in your mouth and begin chewing, your body starts working. The saliva will start to form, helping the body break it down for digestion, the gut is firing messages to sort out what it needs and doesn’t need to give to the body…..BUT WAIT! The chips are flavored with sodium chloride, a form of salt without the minerals. The body thinks, “this can’t be right”, we didn’t get anything from that chip”….”I need another one.” As your hand reaches into the bag, your body anticipates the minerals it was looking for but it will once again be let down. There aren’t any. When the whole bag is empty you may feel sick and full of calories, but satisfaction is not there. Why? The body wasn’t nourished. The wallets of the company you bought the chips from are nourished; at least they get something out of it. Their researched worked!!! If they leave out the minerals from the salt, your body will continue to crave more. Researches shows food and drink companies, if they add or subtract nutrients to food you will have the feeling of dissatisfaction, making you want more.

To date, there are 28,000 different ways a food company can lie to you. They are called Food Additives. They are given the job of preserving the food for eternity, making it look good, making it taste good, making it you want more, making you addicted, and the list goes on.
Unfortunately for us, the food additives really hurt our bodies. We are destructing our bodies with these chemical additives. Everyone is different, so I can not tell you how you have been affected. Maybe you can tell me. Do you have body aches? Do you ever get sick? Do you have constipation? Have you been diagnosed with a disease? Do you have high blood pressure? Do you have allergies? Do you have acne? Do you get depressed? Do you ever get infections? Do you have hair loss? Are you tired all the time? Men, do you have erectile dysfunction? Women, do you have yeast infections? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, there is a real strong chance you are affected by these Chemical compounds the FDA calls a food additive. The average American eats 5-6 lbs of food additives a year, unknowingly.

I am sorry. My feelings are hurt too. It kills me to think I can not trust these companies to sale foods that nourish my body, mind, and soul. All they want is one thing. Your money. Please do not wait around expecting these companies to turn nice and care for us. They are making billions but most likely suffering from the same ailments we are.

I feel like I just opened a can of worms and left them to squiggle all over the place. So let me make some suggestions.

FIRST: It is SO SIMPLE: Eat foods that are LIVE if you want to LIVE. Packaged and processed foods (full fat, low fat, and no fat) are dead, disease causing garbage. A high quality life is given to us through live foods giving us life force energy.

SECOND: Do not feed the wallets of these companies. If we want to make a difference we have to take a stand and buy local and certified organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, grains. Grass fed beef, free range chicken, and wild fish. Unsulphured dried fruits, fresh organic juices, organic teas and coffees, organic oils, (etc) and all the things these foods can make together.

THIRD: Do everything you can to educate those around you. If it wasn’t for the example my Sister-in-law was to me I would not be where I am today. 2 years ago I was downing Diet cokes everyday and eating low fat foods. I was so “healthy”. Little did I know my organs were suffocating with toxins and crying out for relief.

Regrettably, we weren’t made with a zipper down the front and back of our bodies that we can unzip and check out the state of our insides.

Fortunately, we are given signs. Our body tells us. Let us all take a look at what HEALTHY truly is. I challenge you to not lower your standards of health because everyone around you is sick. Being sick, fat, diseased, and lazy are not normal. We are created to be fit, vibrant, energetic, and strong people.

….sigh….and that is just the tip of the iceberg. How can I help you? What questions do you have? Let’s go on this journey together. Let us redefine this sick obese nation. We are worth so much more than money. Don’t you agree?

Suck it up and swallow!

Most people start their day with a hot cup of coffee. I begin my day with a shot of wheatgrass. In my opinion there is no better way. Okay, so it doesn't taste as good as a cup o' joe but the health benefits and energy FAR exceed. In fact an ounce of wheatgrass can give you the same energy as 2 cups of coffee without the negative effects of caffeine! Many people cringe at the thought of consuming one ounce of this "miracle food". My hope is that after telling you all the benefits you will not care what it taste like.

Chad and I cheers to starting the day off right!!

I could seriously write 20 pages on the benefits of this amazing grass but allow me to highlight a few:

Wheatgrass Benefits

-Two ounces of fresh juice equals 3 pounds of organic vegetables in vitamins and minerals

-Wheatgrass is high in oxygen like all green plants that contain chlorophyll. The brain and all body tissues function at an optimal level in a highly-oxygenated environment

-Science has proven that wheatgrass chlorophyll arrests growth and development of unfriendly bacteria

-Dr. Ann Wigmore has been helping people get well from chronic disorders for 30 years using wheatgrass

-Repairs DNA by getting into the tissues, refining them and making them over

-washes drug deposits from the body

-neutralizes toxins in the body

-helps purify the liver

-improves blood sugar problems

- cures acne and even removes scars after it has been ingested for seven to eight months (The diet must be improved at the same time.)

-acts as a detergent in the body and is used as a body deodorant

-A small amount of wheatgrass juice in the human diet prevents tooth decay

-Wheatgrass juice held in the mouth for 5 minutes will eliminate toothaches. It pulls poisons from the gums

-Gargle Wheatgrass Juice for a sore throat

-Drink Wheatgrass Juice for skin problems such as eczema or psoriasis

-Wheatgrass Juice keeps the hair from graying

-Wheatgrass juice improves the digestion

-Wheatgrass juice is high in enzymes

-Wheatgrass juice is an excellent skin cleanser and can be absorbed through the skin for nutrition. Pour green juice over your body in a tub of warm water and soak for 15 to 20 minutes.

-Wheatgrass juice is great for constipation and keeping the bowels open. It is high in magnesium

-increases the function of the heart, affects the vascular system, the intestines, the uterus, and the lungs

-reduces high blood pressure and enhances the capillaries

-removes heavy metals from the body

-is great for blood disorders of all kinds

Okay now you are listening :) and you want to know how to get all these benefits in your body.

1st: if you don't have a juicer, run don't walk, and buy yourself one that can juice fruits, veggies, and wheatgrass. Juicers can be pricey but I would say pay a little extra for one that is not going to make a fuss when you use it frequently. Also, you want one that is easy to clean. Here is a picture of ours. It is the Omega 8005. It works great! You can put any fruit, veggie, or grain through it and it doesn't even hesitate.

2nd: Scout out a health food store or vendor who sales wheat grass flats. (You can grow your own pretty easily. If you want info on that let me know.) If you live near me go the the Keauhou Farmers market. We have a vendor who sales the best wheatgrass I have ever had. Dark leaves, organic, and grown in good soil.

3rd: Set up your juicer, Wet the tips of the grass blades and throw it through the juicer.

4th: Close your eyes, suck it up, and swallow!
(....oh, and if you are at a place that offers the orange slice for right after the shot say no. The acid in the orange reduces the benefits of the wheatgrass.)

Of course, the benefits of wheatgrass are highlighted with a healthy lifestyle, and high-quality living food.

The body is WHOLE!!!

My dad had the wonderful pleasure of going to the hospital this past weekend. He has been fighting a cold and cough for weeks and was not able to get better. My mom finally forced him to the emergency room to find out that he has pneumonia.

Doctors are amazing. Most of us would not be alive without them. But I am literally shocked at some of the things I hear, read, and witness that our health care system has come to. By talking to my Dad, asking questions, and listening to his chest, etc., the diagnosis of pneumonia could be done. However, they injected Iodine into his veins and gave him a cat scan.

This is where I get frustrated. I know I am protective because he is my Dad, but it frustrates me beyond words that they injected Iodine into his veins. Iodine is a carcinogenic. It is a highly toxic poison. It causes cancer and damages the thyroid gland permanently. My Mom called me and asked me what to do. I asked if they had an alternative or could avoid the cat scan all together. They admitted to my parents that it is a poison, however they had no alternative for the cat scan.

The body is Whole you guys! We cannot treat pneumonia and cause cancer and thyroid damage at the same time. Our medical system has turned into a system that treats symptoms without curing the ailment. We are given drugs for migraines that cause liver failure. We are given drugs for minor sicknesses that cause depression. We are given drugs for acne that cause Candida. The list goes on and on and on. Just listen side effects listed to the drug commercials on t.v.

The sad thing is that people would rather take a pill for their symptoms. Instead of looking at the WHOLE body, diagnosing what is causing the problem , treat it naturally and be cured forever.

Our bodies are amazing machines. Give them what they need and you will be amazingly healthy inside and out. It is crucial to understand that every meal and every pill has a consequence or benefit to our bodies.

When you reach into your medicine cabinet ask yourself this question. What is causing the problem that I am taking this medicine for? Is your body reacting to a processed food....or could it even be stressful relationship?

I will never forget the feeling I had 5 years ago, sitting in the dermatologist office and listening to her tell me I would need to take acne medication for the rest of my life. What a hopeless feeling! I would love to call her up today and tell her I have no acne and I have not taken a pill for 3 years.

LOOK at yourself as a WHOLE being. Do not look at the one problem. What is the root cause?

Oh yeah, My Dad will be okay. We will do a blood and colon detox once he is back on his feet to flush his body of the poison injected into his veins.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Educate or Annoy?

In the past two years I have had the most eye opening experiences into health. I am 27 years old this month and I have to say I have never felt more passionate about something in my life. If I can sum it up in two words my passion is holistic nutrition. For my first ever blog post I would like to share with you how, when, and where this passion is coming from.

I guess you could say it is a part of my constitution or genetic makeup to love exercise. I have always been very active. I played every sport I could get my hands on in school and then I discovered triathlon in my senior year of high school. Three sports in one! I couldn't ask for a better pusuit. :) I became a certified aerobics instructor in high school and created a weight loss program for women for my senior exit project. I have always been a "conscious eater". Low fat, diet products were a friend of mine. Little did I know there is SO much more to a food label! Skipping a lot of details in between...I am now a fitness coordinator at a resort in Hawaii. I work in a spa that creates health and wellness for the members.

Having a cold, cough, flu, rash, acne, runny nose, headache, constipation, allergy, etc. were all things I assumed that happen to us in this life. Germs that float around us that sometimes I was lucky enough to avoid and other times would get me. I would accept the ailment....but not to worry, I would just go to the doctor and take a pill or receive a shot that would make me "all better".

About two years ago my husband and I went to my brother and sister in laws house to visit. I knew I would be hungry there because their eating habits were weird to me and they didn't have the processed sugars and chemically enhanced foods that my body had become so accustomed to. But during our stay there something happened to me. I felt really good. I mean my body and energy level felt better than I ever experienced. I started asking questions. My sister in law, Julie, was like a human encyclopedia to me. Everything she would tell me I would suck in like how a sugary milkshake used to appeal to me.

I left their house a new person with a new passion. I have to say I was completely overwhelmed. I realized that everything I knew about "healthy nutrition" up to this point was a marketing scheme and a money maker for thousands of companies. I had learned something so profound to me that it was clearly impossible to ignore. Which leads to the most exciting journey I have been on since.

My hope is that you will find my blogs educational and not annoying. I have been on the other side of the fence thinking that health food stores stink, vegans and raw foodists are freaks, people who take herbs are hippies, and why the hell would someone not where deodorant? Trust me I trusted our health care system, and the FDA too. But after opening my eyes to the amount of people who are sick and not getting better, and observing the healthy glow and energy of a person who eats clean, organic, and raw food I could not ignore it any longer. It has become common sence. I bite my tongue constantly because I do not want to offend anyone but I will not be holding back on my blog. This will be the one place I do not want to hold back. I need this outlet to tell it like it is :)

Why am I so passionate? I think it is the coolest thing that God created everything we need in its natural form to heal us and make us thrive as humans. When I read about the healing properties of a simple piece of fruit, root, grain, or vegetable I get so excited I want to tell everyone. I guess I feel so good I want others to enjoy it too. It is torture for me to see the effects of poor diet on our society.

I know for some, the things I will write is old news but my hope is that I can use this blog to educate in baby steps the true meaning of a healthy diet and lifestyle. God knows I have a long way to go but hopefully we can learn together.

Here we go! Cheers to a Fresh Life. :)
